I took a road trip down to Chatfield, MN to have the first planning meeting for a project in the fall. The Chatfield Center for the Arts is undergoing major renovations. Half the building is being remodeled currently, and the rest is planned for a few years from now. I got to tour the the half-finished theater.
This is the future gallery space at Chatfield Center for the Arts
As part of the renovations, one of the old classrooms is being turned into a gallery space. I'm helping consult on what the new space should look like, and I'll be creating some work related to Chatfield to show at the inaugural exhibition in September. I'm thinking about gathering stories from residents, and using those suggestions to determine what I paint or print for the show. Most of my work so far has been based on places that I have an extended history with, so it will be interesting to see how making work based on this largely unfamiliar town will be. Also, it will be really exciting to see this space transformed by the end of the summer.
Update on the concert last night: I went with my brother and a few friends. Apparently he hadn't ever been to a show before, so I was glad I was able to steer him right for his first concert. I can't say enough about the talent of the musicians in the band. All the songs had been internalized so deeply, and I could tell they had gone through several arrangements to make them really engaging when performed live. There where certain parts where on the album it was just a straight ahead 4/4 chorus, but they abstracted the music so much that I was just lost. I came with high expectations, and was not disappointed at all. Also, they were having so much fun, and were so sincere about wanting us to have fun as well.
